Ethereum Developments in 2026: Upgrades, Staking and a Painful Price Reset

    By AdminJuly 6, 2026

Ethereum entered 2026 carrying momentum from one of its busiest technical years, and it has spent the months since delivering on that momentum at the protocol level while struggling badly at the price level. The gap between those two stories, a network shipping upgrades on schedule and a token trading far below its previous highs, is the defining theme of Ethereum in 2026.

Fusaka Closes Out a Landmark Upgrade Cycle

The Fusaka upgrade activated on December 3, 2025, and its effects are still shaping the network today. Fusaka bundled around a dozen Ethereum Improvement Proposals, with PeerDAS as the headline feature. PeerDAS lets validators verify blob data through sampling instead of downloading every byte, cutting per node bandwidth requirements by roughly 87.5 percent and opening the door to as much as eight times more data capacity for layer 2 rollups over time.

Rather than waiting for the next full hard fork to raise blob limits, Fusaka introduced blob parameter only forks, small scheduled adjustments that can lift data capacity without a coordinated network wide upgrade. Two of these BPO forks already landed in December 2025 and January 2026, pushing maximum blob counts up in stages and steadily lowering the cost of posting data for rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base.

Amsterdam, Glamsterdam and the New Six Month Cadence

Fusaka’s arrival seven months after the Pectra upgrade of May 2025 confirmed something client teams had been hinting at for a while: Ethereum is now targeting roughly two coordinated upgrades per year instead of one. The Amsterdam hardfork followed on May 11, 2026, implemented through Geth version 1.17.4, and introduced block level access lists along with changes to state creation costs, both aimed at making the network cheaper and more predictable to run for node operators.

The next major milestone is Glamsterdam, targeted for the first half of 2026 and expected to deliver enshrined proposer builder separation, a change that moves block construction responsibilities directly into the protocol rather than leaving them to a small group of external builders who currently have outsized influence over transaction ordering. Behind Glamsterdam sits Hegotá, planned for the second half of the year and focused on state management improvements and stronger censorship resistance through Verkle tree style data structures.

Gas Limit Increases and the Push for L1 Capacity

Alongside named hard forks, Ethereum’s gas limit, the cap on computational work allowed per block, has become a live lever that node operators can raise through client level voting rather than waiting for a protocol upgrade. The community doubled the gas limit from 30 million to 60 million during 2025, the first increase of that scale since 2021, and the Ethereum Foundation’s 2026 priorities update described plans to keep pushing the limit toward and beyond 100 million, with some community voices arguing for a target closer to 180 million by year end. Combined with PeerDAS and the BPO schedule, higher gas limits are meant to let layer 1 itself absorb more activity even as most user transactions continue to settle on rollups.

A Difficult Year for the Price of ETH

The technical story has not translated into a strong market for ETH holders. Ether peaked near 4,950 dollars in August 2025 before a long decline that accelerated through the first half of 2026, driven by broader risk off sentiment, sustained outflows from spot Ethereum ETFs, and selling attributed to figures close to the project. By mid 2026, ETH had fallen more than half from its high, trading in a range that put it closer to 1,500 to 1,700 dollars during several weeks of the second quarter, a level unseen since early 2025. The Ethereum Foundation itself responded to the environment with a restructuring that cut roughly 20 percent of staff and reduced its budget by around 40 percent, a sign that even core organizations are adjusting to a harsher funding climate.

Staking and Institutional Plumbing Keep Growing

Underneath the price weakness, participation in staking has kept climbing. Roughly 30 to 32 percent of circulating ETH, close to 38 to 39 million coins, is now staked across close to a million active validators, up from just 11 percent in early 2023. Native staking yield has compressed to around 2.8 percent annual as participation has grown, with MEV rewards adding another half to full percentage point on top for validators running block building software. Entry queues for new validators stretched to more than 60 days at points in 2026, a sign that long term conviction has not disappeared even while the spot price struggled.

Institutional infrastructure has continued to build out in parallel. Ethereum Institutional, a new nonprofit backed by co founder Joseph Lubin and major ETH treasury companies, launched in July 2026 to give banks and asset managers a neutral point of contact for engaging with the network. Custody providers have also moved to make staking more accessible to regulated institutions, with integrations that let banks earn liquid staking rewards on assets such as wstETH without having to move funds out of custody.

What to Watch for the Rest of 2026

For anyone trying to separate the network’s protocol progress from its price action, guida Ethereum tracks both sides as Glamsterdam, gas limit votes and ETF flow data develop through the rest of the year.

The next few months will likely decide which narrative wins out. If Glamsterdam ships on schedule, ETF inflows stabilize and the broader macro environment turns more favorable, analysts at firms such as Standard Chartered still see room for ETH to reclaim levels above 5,000 dollars by year end. If any of those pieces slip, 2026 may end up remembered as the year Ethereum’s engineering finally caught up to its ambitions while the market took its time catching up to the engineering.
